Aged Dependent Relative Visa – Subclasses 114 and 838

The Aged Dependent Relative visa offers a permanent residence pathway for an older, single relative who genuinely relies on an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen for financial support.

As with several other Family visa categories, there are two versions depending on where you are: subclass 114 for applicants outside Australia, and subclass 838 for applicants already in Australia.

Who Can Apply

You'll generally need to:

• be single — not married and not in a de facto relationship;
• meet the applicable age requirement (this depends on the current legislation and shouldn't be assumed from a general rule of thumb — it needs checking against your actual circumstances); and
• be genuinely and substantially financially dependent on your Australian relative.

What "Dependent" Really Means Here

This isn't just about receiving occasional help — the Department expects to see a sustained pattern of financial dependency, generally over a meaningful period, with limited or no alternative means of support. Evidence of remittances, financial records, and a clear explanation of your living situation all matter here.

What the Visa Allows

As a permanent visa, either the 114 or 838 pathway generally allows you to:

• live in Australia permanently with your relative;
• work and study; and
• enrol in Medicare.

Be Prepared for a Long Wait

Like several other non-contributory Family visa categories, the Aged Dependent Relative visa is subject to capping and queuing arrangements, and processing can take a considerable amount of time — often measured in years rather than months.
